A Beginner's Guide to African Wines: An Invitation from The Burgundy

Africa's Wine Renaissance

When most people think of wine, they think of France, Italy, or perhaps California. But Africa has been producing wine for over 350 years, and today the continent is experiencing a renaissance that is producing some of the world's most exciting bottles.

At The Burgundy, our wine cellar holds up to 1,000 bottles — and every single one comes from African soil. Here is your introduction to the wines of our continent.

South Africa: The Powerhouse

South Africa is Africa's largest and most established wine producer, with a history dating back to 1659. Key regions include:

Stellenbosch: Known for bold Cabernet Sauvignons and complex Bordeaux-style blends. The warm climate and granite soils produce wines with depth and structure.

Franschhoek: Originally settled by French Huguenots, this valley produces elegant Chardonnays and Méthode Cap Classique (South Africa's answer to Champagne).

Swartland: The rebel region. Natural winemakers here produce characterful Chenin Blancs and Syrahs that have taken the wine world by storm.

Pinotage: South Africa's signature grape — a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault, producing smoky, fruit-forward reds unlike anything else in the world.

Morocco: Ancient Traditions

Morocco has been making wine since the Phoenicians arrived over 2,500 years ago. Today, regions like Meknès and the Atlas Mountains produce:

  • Robust reds from Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah
  • Aromatic rosés perfect for warm evenings
  • Increasingly sophisticated blends that honour both French and Moroccan traditions
  • Ethiopia: The Surprise

Yes, Ethiopia makes wine — and it is improving rapidly. High-altitude vineyards near Addis Ababa produce wines with bright acidity and unique character. The country's ancient winemaking traditions are being revitalised with modern techniques.

What We Pour at The Burgundy

Our sommelier curates a list that showcases the breadth of African winemaking. During our Taste of African Wine Selection experience, guests sample five wines from across the continent, each paired with artisan cheese and bites.

For those curious about the wider world, our Wines of the World tasting offers comparison — but guests are consistently surprised to find that African wines stand shoulder to shoulder with the best from any continent.

    The Wine Pairing Experience

With our 7-course dinner, guests can add a wine pairing (NGN 195,000 per person including the meal). Our sommelier selects two glasses per guest, chosen specifically to complement and elevate each course. It transforms dinner into a journey through African terroir.
